Hello, Doris here.
Just in case you don’t know me, I’m a secondhand Devon Rex and I’ve hijacked my owner’s page. My humans think I’m about 3 – 4 years old. Personally, it feels like I’ve been alive for a LONG time. Anyway, I’m feeling about 98% well and so I thought I’d use my time to make a book to show everyone how cute I am. This is a far cry from the ‘Eurgh, she’s so mangy’ cries that I used to attract. The profit from any sales I receive from this book go straight to Caring for Animals, a charity dedicated to helping unwanted cats find a good home.
Here’s my book!
My story
As they tell me, I’ve not had the best start to life. I was handpicked to be a breeding cat but the conditions I was kept in were described as ‘appalling’. When I was found, I couldn’t see due to the pus and infection in both my eyes, I couldn’t eat or swallow as I had ulcers all the way down my throat and my ears were teeming with mites. To be honest, I can’t remember much about that time but I do remember that it was pretty miserable – I was always cold and was forced to eat, sleep and go to the toilet in that tiny damp place.
Once I was rescued I spent 9 months and used up at least 3 of my lives undergoing operations and arguing with humans who kept trying to force things down my throat. I recently discovered that when I was taken to the vet, they advised that I be ‘put to sleep’ as I was so unwell. However, my rescuers weren’t having any of it and eventually, I was ready to go to a new home. It still took a while for me to blossom into the gorgeous thing I am now and although I’m now left with cat flu that flares up every now and again, I think I’m in relatively good health! This is my way of giving back to charities and humans who help animals like myself escape from terrible situations.
I’m also on Instagram so if you fancy seeing what else I get up to (you could also learn a few things), you can follow me @howtotrainyourhuman
