A review of a series of MyProtein products by someone who’s new to pre and post-workout supplements.
Exercise supplements. It’s never something I’ve thought was for people like me – people who don’t go for 12 mile runs every day or hang out in the gym for hours on end. But over the last few years, my mind has slowly changed. Running the marathon changed that. Early morning Insanity sessions changed that also. A huge lack of energy changed that the most. Maybe they do have their benefits and aren’t just for wishful muscle-wanting men.
Recently, a pack of MyProtein goodies dropped through my front door; a cookie, a shake and an energy gel. Now was as good a time as any to get acquainted with protein supplement.s
The Cookie
It’s a promising start when I open this cookie – it’s squishy and chewy and chocolately with white chocolate chips. It promises over 50% protein content and best of all, is the easiest way to carry around your post-workout fix or between-meal snack. The one downside with this is that it’s high in sugar but hey, what cookies aren’t? It does have a slightly metallic aftertaste, similar to the protein shake but I’m reassured this is just ‘one of those things’ by an avid protein fan.
Cost: The MyProtein cookie is £1.59 for one 75g cookie.
Impact Whey Protein Shake Powder
With a whopping 82% protein content, this is made from vegetarian sweet cheese, is low in fat and rich in calcium. The Chocolate shake, one of 19 flavours, forms a thick shake when added with milk. It’s too sweet, has less of an aftertaste than most protein shakes and does the job after a workout.
Cost: Impact Whey Protein is £0.99 for a 25g sample or £12.79 for 1kg.
ENER:GEL
Perfect for high intensity, extended periods of time. This is easy to open whilst you’re on the go – I’ve used these on long runs but also wish I’d that this with me for the Nuts Challenge, it would have given me a much needed energy boost. As well as carbohydrate, ENERG:GEL also contains essential electrolytes including magnesium, potassium and sodium and a whole host of B vitamins for quick energy release. As with most gels, this is sweet, sticky and best taken with lots of water.
Cost: ENER:GEL is £19.19 per 24 x 60ml sachet.
