A short stroll from Warren Street, London, you’ll encounter a seemingly-small bakery tucked in amongst the hoardes of restaurants. Lunch will set you back less than £5 and if you head downstairs you’ll find a clean and peaceful area for working, chatting with friends or relaxing.
Kamps German Bakery looks from the outside, like any other small coffee shop displaying its tempting wares, filled wit the hustle and bustle of lunchtime diners. However, once you step inside, it’s very different. For a start, there’s a man on the right making tasty looking flatbreads and on your right there’s a line-up of freshly-made rolls sandwiched between bulging frankfurters and shiny, fruit-jewelled pastries.
This surprised me because from what I can remember of brief weekends in Germany, their food is hardly anything to rave about. Aside from freshly baked pretzels there’s the rather astringent sauerkraut and other strange pickled things.
However and quite frankly, the choice at Kamps German bakery is overwhelming; as soon as you’ve decided on your food, you’ve then got the drinks menu to contend with. Frozen with indecision, I did the only thing possible, I ordered with wild abandon.
Whilst I didn’t have the chance to try everything (believe me, I tried), what I did have was excellent. From a banoffee coffee (probably one of the only coffees I’d go back for) to a fruit laden custard pastry to a frankfurter and finally the piece de resistance, the Alsace bacon, cheese and onion flatbread. This resembles a pizza but the base is paper thin and crispy with generous proportions of topping. Imagine a tartiflette pizza. Oh yes.
If you’re looking for hearty ‘lecker’ food then take the trip to this taste of Germany. And tell me if the cheesy pretzels taste as good as they look.
